If you want a "quick fix" that yields entirely decent results, consider the Onkyo lineup of HT systems. It won't match up to the piece-by-piece assembly outlined by Robert P, but it will be a once-and-done expenditure that delivers admirable results. As long as you get a receiver with analog 5.1 or 7.1 inputs, HDMI 1.3 will not be as important. Especially if you do not buy a high-end system like the one described above, you would not really reap the benefits of having a 1.3 receiver. T J. You already have a good Source (the DVD Player) and one of the best displays (1080P) so you really should get the best Receiver you can afford first. You don't have to buy all of the speakers together .Just start of with the front two you would normally use for stereo and add the others when you can increase your budget.Even two cheap ones will do for the moment.A better Receiver will give you a better sound to send to the speakers.If you were to buy the speakers first and then just a cheap Receiver you wont get a good sound.The speakers can only reproduce what is given to them. Here is the order of importance of equipment. 1. Source 2.Pre-Amp 3.Power Amp 4.Speakers.
