Samsung SCX 4500 Printer – The Hip Multifunction Printer
PC’s, TV’s and Mobile phones as well as a whole host of other electronic equipment have gone through and evolution in design in the past few years. The only piece of machinery that seems to have been left behind during this evolution is the humble, but ever so necessary multifunction printer. The SXC 4500 Toner is a case in point, and really fits the profile of the “coolness factor”. It is a slimmed down, full feature, full functionality but powerful marvel of electronics design. It is a slim 13 x 15.5, x 6.5″ with a stylish exterior. It is simple to operate and incredibly quiet. In fact you are barely able to hear it when it is printing.
Touch sensitive controls feature on the control panel, and although the settings are limited, you have to take the good with the bad. SmartThru software is used for some of the printer functions and for scanning and this can be installed on Windows XP in as little as 5 minutes. You need to have your own USB cable as the printer does not come complete with this. Make sure you have purchased one, or that you have one available from an old printer. One you have set your MFP up, it requires very little warm up time and a printed page can be copied in about 10 seconds.
The paper cassette does not hold much paper and it is situated beneath the printer itself, but if it is compact you want, then its compact you get. The cost of the Samsung SCX 4500 MFP is about $300, and you have to expect a print quality which falls in line with the price tag.
Although the scanner function is relatively slow, it does produce a good quality image at an optical resolution of 600 x 2400 dpi. Toner is simply removed and replaced also, and grey-scale printing is completely passable.
The Samsung SCX-4500 is a more than adequate printer for home use, but it is not recommend it as a networked printer for office work, it does not have a built in Ethernet. Although if everyone in the office has their own printer, it is also fine. Users are also not able to print from a USB drive and it does not have a card reader. It is also not terribly fast at 16 pages per minute out-put, which places it behind some of the competition. However these slight flaws are easily overlooked as this MFP is so stylish, and sometimes style demands certain trade-offs.
