Power Protection; Do We Need It?

Power protection is one of the most usually overlooked parts for those of us who rely on our computers and work stations to make a living. Simply put, the grid can be unpredictable, fuses can blow, and a sudden thunderstorm can present us with blackouts. These problems are not an issue when using power protection.

We often hear people asking whether or not they should look into power protection, so lets just get this out of the way. Power protection is definitely needed.

When a bolt of lightening strikes a power source, or a fuse blows, for those using a computer for work purposes, it simply isn’t worth the risk of losing whatever you were doing, when you were perhaps already pushing against a deadline; of course, it might not be as important if it’s just your home computer. Sure, it was not your fault, but if you lose a days worth of work minutes before completion and have to tell the boss -there was a power outage- well, we know it sounds like the -dog ate my homework- excuse of the Internet age.

If you are running an office, of course, you know that a power outage is the last thing you want. If you’re looking to drain your project budget and ruin morale then sure, ask your employees to put in overtime to make up the days worth of valuable work lost through the power systems shut down.

For a home computer user, power solutions is beneficial and a reliable means of insuring yourself against the possibility of a fried hardware unit, but for a computer professional, power~ protection is a necessity, no two ways about it.

Basically what were saying here is… go ahead and get some power protection. It is really not as costly as you might think. Eaton Powerware offers a few goods like the 5110 Offline to give you a few minutes of offline power to save any work you have been doing, and for less than fifty pounds So even for those of us who just use a computer for blogging and email, there is really no excuse not to keep your files safe.

It will in the end come down to the fact of whether you want to spend hundreds of pounds to replace your hard drive when it gets fried by a blown fuse or do you simply want to spend under fifty pounds protecting your equipment from outages, power sugres and fluctuations.
