New Keyboard to lower the risk of infection in hospitals
The spread of infection and bacteria is always a worry when your in hospital. We go to a hospital to be treated for one alement, but sometimes patients end up coming down with another illness, with shows that the hygiene levels and standards need to be stepped up to keep patients healthy. In the USA alone over 2 million people pick up infections while in hospitals every year, which results in tens of thousands of deaths. Amongst the new procedures and methods to keep our wards even healthier is this- a computer keyboard.
Now while not the first thing we would think would be useful in fighting infection, the new computer keyboards from Medigenic will do just that. Its completely flat so no dirt or dust gets trapped in the keyboard, which makes traditional keyboards a breeding ground for germs which can easily be transfered from the keyboard to staff member to patient. As doctors and nurses are going in between the computer and the paitents, they arent washing their hands, while they will when going between patients. It also has a time interval feature, to let staff know when it next needs to be wiped down to keep hygiene standards high. The keyboard also features a locking system, which allows the keyboard to be cleaned without entering any randomn keys into the computer whilst cleaning. It also has a backlight function for when working in low light situations or at night.
The keyboard has just won the ’2009 medical design excellence awards competition’, getting praise from an industry that can see the benefits of the equipment. The keyboards are going to be sold at $140 each. It was designed and created at the university college London hospital and manufactured in America. In surveys conducted the results have shown that the bacteria on the keyboards on going down by 70% when they are cleaned every 12 hours. In a few years we may see this keyboard become standard at the hospital to cut down on germs in hospitals, and concentrate on the patients illness more.
