You can still find it at some auction sites online, but it is no longer available from the manufacturer. Made by Lexmark, it was a mass market laser printer working with Lexmark Optra E printer cartridge. If you need a new printer they have plenty of replacement models.
Laser printers work differently from inkjet printers. Inkjet printers use droplets of ink sprayed through a nozzle. Laser printers use imaging lasers that project the image to be printed onto a selenium coated drum. The drum is then charged, and draws the toner to the charged areas. The toner is then applied to the paper with a combination of intense heat, and direct contact. They are more efficient than inkjet printers, if not a little more expensive.
There are some dangers to this however. Because of the extensive use of electrical components there is a risk of severe electric shock. So unless you are certified in laser printer repair don’t go messing around in its insides. Although there are circuit breakers, and protection locks so you can touch the outside without worry.
One additional hazard though is the gases given off during printing. Laser printers produce trace amounts of gases from the printing process. Left unventilated these gases can form ozone, and nitrogen oxides. Normally this is not an issue, but if left unventilated can cause a problem. The printer has to be working in a confined space for extended amounts of time in order for the levels to even be noticeable.
The bigger laser printers used by companies that make mass prints need plenty of ventilation however. Most businesses use carbon filters to keep the fumes from spreading outside. There is no risk from these fumes if the printer is handled, and used properly. Unless you shut the printer in a closet for 10 hours and, tell it to run constantly there won’t be any fumes to worry about. The reported cases of a person getting sick from fumes have only happened in extreme circumstances, and are uncommon.
Despite the risks involved Lexmark’s printers are very safe, and efficient. The company is one of the prime examples of printer manufacturing, and relies upon the safety, and reliability of its products. At last count they employed over 13000 people worldwide.
The Optra E printer toner used in a laser printer is no different than that used in a normal inkjet. Without ink though, your printer isn’t going to function properly. Unless you like the idea of having a giant paperweight made of plastic, and metal I’d advise you to keep the ink in stock. Toner is available at most major retail stores, and online.
In closing you can’t buy the Lexmark Optra e anymore. However you can still get the Optra E printer cartridge online though. Lexmark has good technical support, even for their older machines. They still have drivers, and downloads for most of the equipment they have made.
