Is it bad to place a Home Theater Speaker near/beside the TV?

We bought a CRT TV recently together with a Home theater system. I heard that it is bad to put the speakers near or beside the TV since it will have an effect on the screen of the tv. May I know how far should the speakers be so that it will not have an effect to my TV. Thanks for the help.
