Is an AVI HD file less quality than a Blu Ray DVD?

I have a bunch of blu-rays, but I want them all to play from my hard drive to my television. Ripping blu-ray to disk is a very large process and the files are massive. I can convert the blu-rays to AVI HD and save on disk space big time, but not if it’s going to be a major loss of picture quality. Anyone know? Thanks
