How do I install home theater surround sound with a receiver VCR, DVD-digital recorder & cable TV?

I don't want to press a lot of buttons. I want to watch cable through "video 1"; watch the DVD-digital recorder on "video 2" and be able to turn the cable channel without having to stop recording on the DVD.
