Can the iPhone 3G use the GPS and Maps app when not near cell phone service?

I was hoping I could use my iPhone 3G when going off road as an actual hand held GPS device. Can it do that or must you be near a cell phone tower?
so to clarify, you are able to use your GPS/Maps function in areas without cell phone coverage? Like in the desert or mountains? Where there are no cell phone towers?
