To get 5.1 sound to stereo, I'd recommend something like a SoundBlaster Live! card. You'd have to have your computer running, but the card has signal in, signal out jacks and various sound setups and "colorization" options with the included software. It takes an amplifier between the speakers and the computer's card. The Platium series of that SoundBlaster card had a front panel with all the input jacks to slide into an empty Hard Drive bay on the computer.
