Any ideas on non-working home theater projector – “In Focus” Screenplay 4805?

Have a home theater with a built-in projector (attatched to ceiling) – In Focus Screenplay 4805. Anyway, the bulb burned out a few months ago and I replaced it (0!!) – worked fine. Just today, as we were watching, the picture went black (no pop or flash or anything) and the projector sounded as if it were operating, then going off, then turning on again, etc., but no picture. When working properly, it does make a bit of background noise (I think the fan to cool the bulb goes on and off as needed), but this sound was too frequent, like it was trying to work, but wouldn't make it, then would try again, repeatedly. Even after letting it cool and restarting everything – nothing. I took out the bulb and I don't see anything obvious wrong with it. I don't want to spend another 0 and find out that it's not the bulb.
Anyone with similar problems or ideas to check without spending mucho cash on a service call?
