From email account logins to bank pin numbers, it seems as if there are a million different passwords and passcodes for the average person to try and remember. While many deal with the need to keep track of various passwords by simply using the same one for all their accounts, others, questioning the safety of this technique, use more than one. He starts constructing his Idea Map by placing a representative image in the map’s center. He then divides his map into different sections, one for each letter or numerical character of his login, via branches that he attaches to the central image. For instance, Tom’s bank login is PERK09, which contains six characters, so he adds six branches to his map. Next, he attaches any pictures or graphics to each branch, in the order of his password, left to right, that he feels will help him better remember each character. For the letter “P”, as an example, Tom attaches a picture of a father to the first branch on the far left of his map to represent his dad Pete, whom he affectionately refers to as “Mr. P”. He continues in this fashion until he has finished his map, which may resemble the Idea Map diagram that is attached.

It’s time for Tom to check his bank balance and also time for him to put his Idea Map to the test. As he begins to log onto his account, Tom looks at each branch on his map to remember his password’s characters. When he reaches the branch to the far right of his map, types in the appropriate character, and hits “enter”, he is pleased to read the words “Login Successful” for the first time this week. Marveling at his ability to finally remember his banking login, Tom realizes the advantage of using an Idea Map to remember this sensitive information. Had he written his bank password on paper, he would have risked losing it, or, worse, someone else seeing it. By using the Idea Map, however, Tom was able to “map out” his login using visual images and colors that held associative meaning only to him. Therefore, he was able to look at the map and easily remember his login while, at the same time, keep his login information private. In addition, he finds that, over time, the visual associations have helped him to process and remember his login information that he now no longer needs to consult his Idea Map while logging in to his account. Thanks to Idea Mapping, Tom finds that he now has an easy and safe way to remember all of his important passwords and secure information.
